Derby

Matt and his dad spent a lot of time preparing
for the Pinewood Derby Race!
They cut, sanded, painted, weighed
and did it all over again.
I was sent to the store with instructions for more materials
(the first car was destroyed before it ever got raced)

Finally race day arrived!

I didn't realize it was such a big production!

Matt waited anxiously to see how his car would perform.

So, he didn't win 1st prize his rookie year.
But at least he didn't come in last!
He's already talking about what improvements
he'll be making for next year...
(So is his dad)

Oh, I remember those derby days...Grandpa Johannesen's help and expertise was always relied on to produce a 'winner'! I did not know they actually write books on how to build a high performance pinewood derby car! One of the 'rites of passage' to manhood is to 'help'your son build his first pinewood derby car, as someone surely built yours for you :)

So fun! I remember going to those with my brother. What a great time for fathers and sons! Cute pictures of Afton too. She is just adorable! Every time I see her, I wish she and Isabelle lived closer.....they could be good friends! Your family is just too cute!

I am so glad it turned out okay. Paul was talking about how stressed he was about this "project"! He didn't want to be "that dad" that couldn't make a derby car! Way to go Paul and Matt!!!
