Halloween

We're lucky to have a grandma who makes Halloween easy for us:
We put in our costume orders in September and voila!
Even Paul sort of dressed up.
He went along with his Pirate Queen and Pirate Princess..
Halle wanted to be a BYU cheerleader-
Go Cougars!
The girls are happy to pose!

Afton and her friend Mallory went as 80s prom queens

Ahoy Pirate Princess Nora!

and Matthew wanted to be a WWI flying ace.
This is the only picture he'd give us.

Grandma really came through this year with our variety of requests!  The kids love coming up with ideas and knowing that Grandma will make it happen!

Goofy's Challenge

The reason for our Disney World trip started back in the summer.
I decided I wanted to do the Goofy's Challenge Race-
run 1/2 marathon on day 1
run a full marathon on day 2
I'm not fast, so I figure I can be impressive by putting in the miles.

I trained all through the fall and early winter.
My longest training run was a full 26 miles the Saturday before Christmas.
I actually went into the race feeling ready and excited!

Disney makes races a lot of fun--lots of music, cheering fans, characters, and great volunteers!
Before I knew it, I was finished with the half-marathon.
I felt really good and actually finished under 2 hours.

The half-marathon Donald Medal
(Disney has the best medals!)
I was finished running and back to the hotel before anyone was awake,
so we got ready and hit the parks until 9 pm
(I would have stayed later, but knew I was getting up at 3 am the next day for the marathon)
There is nothing like running through Cinderella's Castle,
and a nice volunteer took this picture for me!

I felt amazing during the entire race-which is a first for me.
My previous 2 marathons I was ready to stop at mile 20.
(Disney is awesome and actually did have characters from The Haunted Mansion at mile 18 or so and you could lie down and take a picture by a headstone!)
I ran into a guy from New York around mile 22 and we started chatting.
He asked if I was planning to go under four hours and I responded I hoped to be anywhere around there.
Then he looked at my bib and in shock said, "You already ran yesterday?!  You're looking awesome!"
That is totally how I felt!
So I cruised in to the finish line and picked up my Mickey medal and my Goofy medal!

I was so proud of myself and proud of what I had accomplished.
What do you do when you finish Goofy's Challenge?
You go to DisneyWorld, of course!
Paul proudly took a picture of my new hardware...

BYU Football @ Notre Dame

Paul's aunt Julie came out for a visit and since Paul had to fulfill some duties elsewhere, Afton and I took her to the BYU football game at Notre Dame.
It was a really fun experience--
the fans were great, stadium was amazing, and the weather was pleasant!

Hanging out in the Quad--lots of BYU fans...

including many of our friends, both near and far!
It was like a reunion!

Afton and Sadie hanging out, waiting for lunch

Notre Dame library with the famous "Touchdown Jesus" painting

Beginning of the game

Aunt Julie and Afton

We had some high-up seats, but it was great for blocking the wind and getting a great view of the stadium

Mom and Afton!

BYU is up at halftime!

Unfortunately, the lead didn't last, but we had a great time anyway!

My Summer Happenings...

Our summer vacation to Utah was cut shorter than usual because Paul and I were headed on Pioneer Trek
 Our awesome family!
We had great kids in our group--lots of hard-workers and positive attitudes!
Playing Ninja tag before we headed out

We stopped along the handcart trek to listen to pioneer stories

This was our first day of 7 miles
beautiful weather and scenary

Our great kids pulling the family handcart.
It was a tough three days, physically, but a tremendous spiritual journey.
I love trek and all that we learn from stepping into pioneer shoes for a moment.

My other big project this summer...
After days of trying to motivate Nora to use the potty,
I turned it over to Afton.
Potty-training done.
Nora is super proud of herself and likes to announce her bathroom activities to anyone and everyone!

We also had a fun activity in downtown Chicago with our good friends.
Bev wanted to do an "adventure-race" for her birthday
We had clues to find landmarks and photo ops around Chicago
I will say that Bev and Michelle definitely had this down better than me and the guys...

This made me laugh--a "pre-broadway" show called Kinky Boots

The boys decided that we should ditch the race and head to Rosebud Prime for a leisurely afternoon lunch.
I think next time Bev might want to be more selective in picking her teammates!

Mothers' Day Gift

I saw this idea on Pinterest,
and with my new photography class learning,
thought it would make a sentimental gift for our mothers...

I was really excited at how well the pictures turned out!
I even made the same gift for me of my beautiful girls in my wedding dress!

Germany & Austria

Paul was invited to do a presentation in Munich, Germany to the different Franklin Covey offices in Europe,
so it seemed like a good trip for me to tag along!
It was a short trip, but we were able to see and experience a lot!
On our way from the airport, we pulled off for something else and saw the signs pointing to Dachau.
We decided since we were so close, we should go.
It was so interesting and sobering to be there and know what happened 60 years ago.
This camp started as a prison for political opponents of the Nazis and only later held Jewish occupants.
The entrance gate that ironically states "Work makes you free"

there were many monuments and tributes dedicated to all those who had perished, promising that these atrocities would never happen again
 Looking back at the entrance
The "camp road" that divided the rows of barracks
the fence and gate leading to the crematorium area
German students are required to visit a concentration camp
and we saw many students here who were laughing and joking in the camp.
I think it must seem so far removed from our daily life that it's hard to process what happened.

Paul and I were starving after seeing Dachau,
and we followed a misleading sign pointing to a McDonald's
(Paul prefers familiar food)
Instead, we found this charming, authentic restaurant for our first meal in Germany.
We were actually staying in a resort outside of Munich.
While Paul had meetings, I braved a two hour drive by myself to see this:
Neuschwanstein Castle

I also braved walking out on this bridge which spanned a deep chasm in order to get my picture
I was so proud of my accomplishment in spending the day entirely on my own in Bavaria--
not many English speakers until I got to the tourist area.
Although, the music on the radio was all American--made the drive easier!

This was the beautiful area we stayed in on Tegernsee Lake
We then drove through the alps to Salzburg!
I LOVE Salzburg!

Salzburg's favorite son--Mozart

St. Peter's Church

Inside

St. Peter's cemetery
The plots are all beautifully tended--and rented!
The cemetery sends you a bill every year and when someone's descendants have all passed on and no one is left to pay the bills, the plot is sold to someone else

We took the tram up to the fortress which kept Salzburg from major invasions until WWII
The main shopping street with their adorable ironwork signs

Even McDonald's!

 Mozart's birthplace!

The next day we took the Sound of Music Tour
Cheesy and lots of fun!

The gardens where Maria and the kids sing and dance
The movie is always showing the fortress in the background

 More garden dancing scenery above
and the "dwarf garden" they sing around
This is the exit to the theatre when they "escaped"
The movie used two houses for the Von Trapp residence.
The one above was used for the back.
We drove by the yellow house used for the front, but they don't allow tourists
"I am sixteen going on seventeen"

The opening scenes of the movie fly across these beautiful villages
We stopped and had delicious apple strudel with ice cream.
(I hummed "These are a few of my favorite things")

The movie used the outside of the Abbey on the Salzburg fortress,
but used the inside of this church in Mondsee for the wedding

 Traditional Bavarian dress--isn't it adorable!

We then drove back to Munich,
right into the championship soccer match between Bayern (Bavaria-Munich) and Chelsea

It was a madhouse (even 3 hours before the game)
so we snapped some pictures and got out of there before the already drunk and rowdy crowd got any crazier!

We saw these Maypoles in all the little villages.
I just loved the culture and traditions of this beautiful place!
It will definitely be on my "return" list of places to go!
